Hannah and Julia talk about getting an after-school job.. |
2015/9/27
AW4p |
This is an after school
job conversation that talks about different places to apply to as well as a
comment or two about each place they mention. My own high school allowed
many seniors (12th graders) to leave school early to go to their jobs.
This was popular for those students who wanted to make some extra spending, or
saving money.

American school students typically have about 3 months of summer vacation, or

This dialogue is about a high school student who
will start working a part-time job. I’m sure that
the high school students in both America and Japan work because of similar
spending or savings goals. Although one difference is that many students
start driving without their parents usually from the age of 16. So, if a
16 year old does have a car to borrow from their parents, or have their own car
that they bought themselves, then the gas expenses, or insurance and
maintenance can become expensive. That’s
one of the reasons I needed a part-time job when I was a high school student

Julia and Hannah ask Marie about her brother's wedding. |
2015/5/24

This conversation jumps

that the wedding was in a big barn. I found this interesting, because
I've never heard of a barn wedding. So, I guess some people choose barn
weddings, but it must not be common, at least in the areas I lived in Oregon.
The barn wedding reminded me of my college days. I went to a university
in Oregon, and much of Oregon is used for farming. This means that there
are many barns in Oregon. Sometimes a group of college friends
(fraternities or sororities) would rent out barns to have and have a western
themed party. Everyone always had a great time dressing up as cowboys and
cowgirls.

This is a fun, realistic dialogue about students using cell phones in

phones into class, and maybe each teacher has a different rule. However,
I'm guessing that most high schools allow turned off cell phones in class, but
it must be kept in their bag. I'm guessing this because I've heard some
American parents talking about how important it is that their child has a cell
phone at all times, just in case there is a school emergency. By a
"school emergency" they meant a "school shooting."
So, based on this way of thinking, I am guessing that cell phone rules are much

homework is because summer vacation is in between grades. This school
year in Clackamas, Oregon (my home area), school finished June 11 and started
September 3rd. So, when the students went back to school, they started a
new year of school. As an English teacher in Japan, I wish the

This
is a great article to mention that my home in Nagano was recently snowed in! It
was amazing, and frightening, just how quickly the stores ran out of food, and
the gas stations became empty. The schools even shut down for three days in my
area, near Karuizawa. In Oregon, USA, when schools have a "snow day,"
it means that the school buses can't make it to your house. When this happened,
a few of us from the valley would get together and take our metal runner sleds,
or snowboards, down the long, steep and snowy streets! Great
memories! |

The Super Bowl is America’s championship football game.
This year the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos will battle it out
on February 2nd 2014. As mentioned before, it’s the No. 1 watched TV show in America. The game is the main
event, but the halftime show and commercials are great to watch as well! The Super Bowl is so popular that if a
company wants to advertise during the game, it costs around $4 million dollars
for a 30 second commercial. Yes, that’s crazy! |
