Congratulations Japan!  I was very excited that the elementary school (Little League) baseball world series was won by the Tokyo team!  Yes, I cheered for Japan!  I remember watching these world series games when I was younger.  Every year, it's always exciting to see how talented these younger teams around the world are.  These Japanese students are in elementary school, but did a great job introducing themselves in English!  Here is the link if you'd like to see it:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUwWgm-C84Q .  One of the students even lived in America for a while!  He speaks in this video with perfect English.  Great job Japan!  Congratulations on the win!

Oldest captive giant panda celebrates with bamboo, cake

This article is about the longest living panda ever.  She is 37 years old!  That's truly amazing to think of a panda being this old.  She has outlived the 20 year old average that most pandas are expected to live.  I hope she can stay healthy for another few years or so.

Nobel winner Malala opens school for Syrian refugees.

I really like Malala Yousafzai, the girl who was shot for trying to help girls get an education.  I think it's articles like these that really remind us how lucky we are, not only to have a good education system, but to live in a safe environment.  I wish her best of luck as she continues to her fight for education.

Granny‘idol group’from Okinawa snatches spotlight.

I loved learning about this group called KBG84!  No, it's not an AKB48 group, but instead a group of ladies from Okinawa who are around 84 years old.  They sing and dance and have some videos out!  The article is difficult, but the questions are easier in order to motivate and feel good that one can understand some from a real English newspaper.  Watch one of their videos called, "Come and Dance" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ANQOHRxFwM .  I also included this link on the worksheet.

Hit manga ‘One Piece’enters the record books.

"One Piece," is another great example of a Japanese comic book spreading around the world.  Even though I don't read this comic, I still know some of the character names.  I see "One Piece" collectables everywhere!  This article also uses a lot of present participles, so it's a great review or introduction to it.

92-year-old becomes oldest woman to complete marathon

This is a motivating article about a 92-year-old lady who has worked hard to complete a marathon.  That's right, a 92-year-old lady walked and ran 42 kilometers!  That's amazing!  I hope I will be in half as good of shape as her when I get older!

Hold on to your futon when disaster strikes home

I thought this article presented an interesting idea/product that could save lives.  It's a futon that floats on water!  I'm not sure how many of these futons they'll sell, but I like their style of thinking.  It's little ideas like this that could make a huge difference in someone's life! If I lived near the ocean, I might just purchase one of these futon mattresses.

Nagano Prefecture broke the Guiness World Record!  They made 1,585 snowmen in one hour!  The reason I like this article is because it shows the difference in culture, even in a snowman.  In Japan, a snowman is typically made with two snowballs, but in western culture, it's made with three.  I find this interesting.  Nagano broke the record, but it was already beat by Drama 24 Unhandy Handyman (Japan) at Zuriyama Observation Field, in Akabira, Hokkaido, Japan, on 28 February 2015, according to the Guinness World Records website as of 3-11-2015.
